Walk Leaders Workshops
Surrey Area Ramblers have started running courses for new walk leaders. All Surrey groups need more leaders, and the objective of these courses is to give members the confidence to lead walks.
Mavis White and I were lucky enough to attend the first of these courses in May 2013. We had both led walks but lacked experience. We were given guidance on finding walks, what makes a good walk, and on being a good leader. The basics of map reading and the use of a compass were also covered, and tips were given about websites which can be useful for planning and mapping walks. After lunch, each of the four experienced leaders running the course took a small group of us out in to the surrounding countryside for a practical session of map reading and using a compass. The course was very useful and I can now use a map and compass better than I could previously. I still have some way to go.
More courses are to be held. If you are interested in attending, please contact the Publicity and Recruitment Officer, Mavis White. She will let you have details of the next courses when they are published. Contact details are shown on the contacts page.
