Richmond Ramblers

We walk in London and the South East.

A Tribute to David Sharp

David Sharp, a highly respected figure in the Ramblers nationally and in South East England, died recently following a long period of illness.

David was key to the setting up of Richmond Group in May 1982 and served as the first Chairman for thirteen years until 1995. He continued to serve on the Group’s Committee for the rest of his life. He has always worked hard for the Group and was very active and inspirational as a walk leader until recently. His knowledge and experience were invaluable and his dry sense of humour was much appreciated.

David was instrumental in establishing the Thames Path. This was the fruit of a huge amount of negotiating with numerous bodies with interests along the length of the Thames. It was a great achievement and at the launch David was referred to as “New Father Thames”! He produced the definitive guidebook for the Thames Path as well as one for the London Outer Orbital Path. Both are a delight to read and a pleasure to use.

For many years until only a few months ago he displayed his considerable writing talents as a hard-working editor of South East Walker. This was always a masterpiece of informative and colourful items written in an engaging style and containing many photographs that he had taken himself.

David held the position of President of Surrey Area and was a Vice President of the Ramblers Association.

We are very saddened by this loss and extend our condolences to his family, especially to Margaret who has always worked so hard with David in promoting the Ramblers and in supporting Richmond Group.
